Different Kinds of Fat
There are three kinds of fat in your body:
- Structural fat: Fills the gaps between various organs. It's a packing material that acts as "bedding" for your kidneys, insulates your nerves and keeps your skin smooth. It also provides a cushion under the bones of your feet so you can walk.
- Normal reserve fat: This fat is stored evenly throughout your body in the muscles and gives your shape an attractive appearance. When you don't eat enough food, the body uses it for fuel. Fat is a substance that packs the highest caloric value into the smallest space. So the fuel you need for muscular activity and to maintain body temperature can be most economically stored in this form.
Both structural fat and reserve fat are normal, and even if the body stocks them to capacity, this can never be called obesity.
- Abnormal reserve fat: Overweight people suffer from this type of fat. Although abnormal reserve fat is also a potential fuel source, typically, on a diet you burn only normal reserve fat for the first two months. And only then will you start to burn abnormal reserve fat.
When an overweight person tries to reduce weight by starving himself, he will first lose normal reserve fat. When these stores are exhausted he begins to burn up structural fat, and only as a last resort will the body let go of its abnormal reserve fat, though by that time the person usually feels so weak and hungry that the diet is abandoned.
When overweight people lose the wrong kind of fat the face becomes drawn and haggard, but the belly, hips, thighs and upper arms show little improvement. The fat they have come to detest stays on, and the fat they need to cover their bones diminishes. Their skin wrinkles and they look old and miserable.
